Abandoned

teal abandon

I don't know what it is about this house that I love so much. The color? The brick foundation? The small size? My neighborhood is filled with houses just like this. I'm a kid in a candy store, searching for turn of the century and later designs. I stalk the abandon houses within walking distance of my home and covet the architectural remnants.

I know that these houses are standing on borrowed time. Some of them already have pink signs posted to their doorways. They will be demolished within the year. If a house is lucky enough to be within the quadrant of revitalization, a new home will take its place. While this is indeed a positive development, I feel a sense of loss. A squatter will likely lose his or her base. Cats and dogs will lose their refuge from rainstorms, and the neighborhood as a whole will lose a bit history. Time marches. Progress is made. And I keep walking in search of abandon(s).

What a gorgeous old house! I grew up on a street lined with 100+ year old homes. I loved it, and wish we could find the same kind of thing here in Wisconsin. Sadly most of those "old ladies" are in bad neighborhoods. But I keep hoping once we're ready to be done with our starter house that we'll be able to find a fabulous older home with character. and this turquoise gal's got character! What a find!
