Grace, like most preschoolers, loves to "help out" in the kitchen. Granted, many days I don't need or want help, but I understand her desire to mimic her mommy. She's my second in command when I bake bread, and the girl loves to make cookies. Typically I dress her in one of my old aprons, wrapping it around her body twice to get a tight fit. Regardless of how well I have attached the apron, she is invariably covered in flour or sugar within minutes.
I decided to make her a Grace-sized apron a few weeks ago, and she chose, quite possibly, the most garish material I own. My grandmother gave me a box full of fabric; some of it from the 1960's or earlier. I have a psychedelic butterfly polyester, a cotton imprinted with images of the Dutch countryside, and Grace's favorite, an orange and cream striped polyester with irises. The picture above does not do this fabric justice.
It took me an afternoon to make the pattern and sew the pieces together. When I was finished Grace was ecstatic. She shrieked that this creation was the most beautiful item she had ever worn. She was so enthralled that she wore it to bed (on top of an equally garish pink polyester Dora nightgown; some styles don't change all that much). I was tickled of course, and I sent a picture off to my grandmother. Goodness knows what she made out of that fabric forty years ago.

That is so cute - it makes me want to cry! Tell Grace that I will make cookies with her when I come down - I think it is a lot of fun. We can do the cut out ones and then put a whole bunch of icing and sprinkles on it so that she will be the only one that wants to eat it with all of that extra sugar. I hope you are enjoying your time at the beach. Talk to you when you get back.

What is it about kids & garish outfits? Cracks me up!!!! :)
I'm quite impressed with your sewing skills! I literally can't sew a button on (you think I'm kidding...). Greta has just recently become interested in “helping” out with the cooking herself. A couple days ago she was talking about how “Daddies are better at cooking than Mommies, though Mommies can cook okay.” We had to explain to her that, though this is true in our house, she has a bit of a skewed perspective. Ryan is a great cook, though. Man, this reply is revealing how poor my domestic skills really are! I should stop before it gets worse. Hope your vacation was wonderful,
Mandy
