Scene: Driving to Grace's School this morning.
Me: "So Grace, can you remind Ms. Flanders and Ms. Griffis that you are going to Indianapolis on Thursday?"
Grace: "Mmm-hmm."
Me: "Do you remember why we are going to Indiana?"
Grace: "Yeah, we're going to see my Grammie and Poppie and meet Baby Whit-e-ney."
Me: "Right."
Grace: "I'm going to tell Ms. Flanders that Baby Whit-e-ney is sick. She has a broken heart, and she can't eat very well, so she has to have a tube in her mouth. But doctors are going to fix her broken heart, right Mommy?"
Me: "Right, baby, the doctors are going to fix her broken heart."
_____
We never told Grace that Whitney's heart was broken--just that she was sick and that her heart was laboring. We've been careful to keep our emotions in check when we talk about the situation, but Grace hangs onto every word and notes the subtleties in our expressions. I was uncertain as to whether or not she truly understood about Whitney's condition. Now I know that she does, all too well.

We'll be praying! Have a safe trip!
Thanks, Therese.
Good luck! We will be thinking of you and the whole Indy Byron family. Please call if you need to whine - I will be around for most of your trip. We can sip some wine over the phone!
