Huh?

At the end of last week our local newspaper reported that some parents had contacted the school system to complain about plans to watch Obama's inauguration. The schools have set aside time for their students to watch this momentous and historic occasion. Apparently some parents don't find this to be an educational activity.

Huh? This is history, people. Even if you didn't vote for the man, I'm confounded that you can't recognize the gravity of this moment: the first African American to hold the office of President of the United States. It's a pretty big deal, like it or not.

Adding insult to injury: In 2001, after a highly contested and disputed election, there were no reports of parents complaining about their children watching W's inauguration. Those parents remained silent not because they were happy about the election results, but rather because they have a respect for history.

An editorial published yesterday best sums my feelings about this:

I hope those parents who sent the e-mails sleep fitfully Tuesday night knowing their commander in chief is a black man, and there’s not a damn thing they can do about it.

Thanks, Mandy.

The other part that irritates me about this story is that the schools have caved on this issue. Alternative educational activities will be available for students whose parents object to watching the inauguration.

RIDICULOUS! And this is the school system that Grace will join next year!

Thankfully, I watched the concert on the Mall last night, and it made me feel a lot better.

Wow, Ellen. It really wouldn't matter if Elmo was being inaugurated, it is fantastic and *educational* to watch a peaceful transition of power in our country. What a shame for those kids who won't get to see that. They could learn a good lesson that they obviously aren't learning from their parents!

2 things...... First, a child follows what their parents teach them. (even if school teaches them differently)

Second, as Jane Pauley stated, we will watch the inauguration on TV and cry. (just like we did in election night).
Yay!!

When the Warner Robins little league baseball team won the little league world series the schools all stopped school so they could watch the game. Warner Robins is just 30 minutes down the road from Macon so it was a big deal to have a middle Georgia team win it all (even if they are just 12 years old). Allow me to go out on a limb and say the Obama inauguration is more important than the Little League World Series. Come on Macon. You can do better than that!
