Calling in sick

I've been working for a whole week, and already my kid is home sick. Well, actually, this is the second day she's been home sick. The first day was last Wednesday, but she was back in school the very next day. The bug she has now looks like a longer term illness. Is it a cold? The flu? How do you tell the difference? It's a serious question. If anyone can enlighten me, I would appreciate it.

The last time I had the flu, I was in such a sorry state that my mother in law had to fly down to take care of us. Kids are different with illnesses. Grace had a urinary tract infection for nearly a month before she had any notable symptoms. Julia will have a raging fever, the kind that requires tepid baths, and the next day she'll be chipper.

In any case, I'm not getting any work done, which is okay. Instead, I have time to mindlessly search the internet for the meaning of life or watch hours of PBS kids. I'll probably do both. For your enjoyment (when you're done instructing me on the difference between a cold and the flu), here are some pictures I took of the girls this weekend. We went in search of the perfect pumpkin. Did you know that there's a particular method to choose one? Hold your head to it and listen (Grace and Julia demonstrate this technique in the photos).

OK -- Google (actually flufacts.com) confirms my common wisdom diagnosis -- colds usually don't have a (high) fever, cough is mucousy, not as achy, tired, etc.
Here's the link:

Have fun carving the pumpkin -- or did you already?
Did you buy any for pies? (really easy -- but you knew that...)
love,

Love love love the pics -- especially and flower ones... and especially the pumpkins ones. :) Did you go to Elliot farms? My poor kids had to pick their pumpkins from the bin at WalMart.

Hope everyone is feeling better soon. Enjoy PBS!

I've always read the differences being a fever and aches with the flu and not with the cold.

Hope she's all better now!

Great pictures from the pumpkin patch too!
