One of the coolest aspects of raising kids is watching how they develop their language skills. English doesn't always follow rules the way a kid thinks it should. Tense gets complicated. Here are a few gems from Grace:
Too or Two
Ellen: "Don't eat too much popcorn. I don't want you to spoil your dinner."
Grace: "I won't eat two much, Mom. I'll eat three much."
Top and Bottom or Up and Down
Craig: "Grace,where do we put your socks?"
Grace: "In my down drawer."
~~~
Grace: "Mom, you get the ice from the Up refrigerator and the water from the Down refrigerator."
How do you pronounce does?
Ellen: "Grace, does Daddy have your backpack?"
Grace: "He do's."
Where does won't come from anyway?
Craig: "Grace, please don't bother Ollie."
Grace: "I not will bother him anymore."
When to add 's'
Ellen: "Did you tell Ms. Flanders that you needed to use the potty?"
Grace: "She knews I needed to."
There are so many other instances when Grace does something creative with language that I can hardly keep track. Craig, in particular, loves her missteps so much that he never wants me to correct her. He's right. She'll be correcting us before we know it.
